About this painting

One wave climbs the canvas's left edge and curls over to the right, leaving a pale ivory hollow at its centre. Its outer edge is built from thick ridges of gold paint that run from the crest down into a broad gold band along the bottom.

Inside, the wave grades from deep bottle green in the shadowed trough to aqua and mint, then to a white rim of foam. Flecks of gold and white scatter across the upper right like spray. The impasto is heaviest in the gold, standing visibly off the canvas, while the ivory ground is almost bare, keeping the curl legible at a distance.
