About this painting

Two currents of deep blue meet across a mottled gold field: a navy wave surges up from the lower left, threaded with fine white lines, while a teal band falls from the top right drawn in thin dark strokes. The lines run side by side, swelling and pinching like water over rock.

Between the two, the gold and cream ground is cloudy and freckled with pale flecks. Pale lines on dark below, dark lines on light teal above: that reversal makes the two blue forms read as one movement split by a band of light. The surface is smooth, even acrylic.

Should AA#739 be read as water?

It can be: the parallel lines curl up from the lower left like a breaking wave, which suits a spa or bathroom scheme. Nothing is literal, though, with no horizon and no shore, so in a hallway it works equally well as plain pattern.

Why are the lines white in one wave and dark in the other on AA#739?

It is a deliberate contrast. On the navy mass at the lower left the lines are pale, so it reads as foam over deep water; in the teal band at the top right they are dark, so that form looks shadowed and further away. The switch gives depth to a flat surface.
