About this painting

One sunflower fills the top of the canvas, its head turned almost straight out at the viewer and ringed with petals laid on so thickly they stand up like curled ribbons of lemon, gold and burnt orange. The seed head is a dense chocolate-brown dome worked in short circular strokes.

Below the bloom the handling changes completely. Leaves and stem are loose sweeps of lime and bottle green on a pale grey-white ground, and near the bottom edge the paint thins into vertical drips, so the heavy flower seems to float above a quick, unfinished field.

Why is the lower half of TA#059 so loosely painted?

It sets up the contrast the picture depends on. Keeping the leaves, stem and ground to fast, thin strokes, and letting the paint run, leaves all the weight to the sculpted head. Up close the drips show how the paint was handled; at a distance they turn into sunlit grass.

What happens to the petal ring of TA#059 in side light?

It springs into relief. Each petal is a loaded knife stroke pushed up at the tip so it curls away from the canvas, and light from one side leaves a small shadow under every one, all round the flower, while the brown seed head reads as a darker, rougher dome.
