A single sunflower head, tilted slightly toward the viewer, sits high on the canvas, its petals sculpted in thick, rounded strokes of lemon yellow on the left and deep orange on the right. The brown centre is built up in rough layered paint, with white highlights where petals fold over it.

Around it the ground is a thin, watery wash of pale lilac grey with the canvas weave still visible, a splash of soft green above the flower and blue-grey drips running down beneath it.
