Nine fish swim up a sandy ochre river that cuts the canvas from top to bottom, seven of them glossy gold and two a bright turquoise that breaks the pattern. On either side, deep teal banks are ridged with raised gold lines running in close, wavering contours, like the edges of a topographic map.

The shoal follows the bend of the channel in a loose zigzag, and the last fish at the bottom turns sideways towards the right bank, a small break that stops the column looking mechanical.
