Half a dozen cream roses with butter-yellow hearts open on long green stems, clustered in the upper half of a square canvas, with tight buds still waiting at the edges. Knife-laid petals curl over one another in thick layers, so each bloom has real depth: shadowed in the centre, catching light on its outer rims.
