About this painting

Pink cosmos, peach and yellow blooms rise on thin dark stems through a buttery cream ground, the largest pink flower opening near the top right as if lifted by a breeze. Small flecks of lilac and sky blue are tucked between them.

The ground is far from flat colour: knife passes overlap across it, giving the whole surface a broken, sunlit shimmer. Toward the bottom it turns pale green, and the stems become long upward strokes of olive and near-black, with knife ridges running along them.

What gives TA#940 its sense of height?

The stems. They start at the bottom edge as long upward strokes and stop at staggered heights, with the largest pink bloom placed high on the right. The eye climbs from the dense green base to the open cream at the top, which makes a tall canvas feel taller still.

Why does the surface of TA#940 look cracked?

The paint is not cracked. The cream ground was spread in many overlapping knife passes, and each pass leaves a thin raised edge where it stops, so the surface breaks into small facets. In raking light those edges show clearly; seen face-on they soften into a gentle, broken shimmer.
