Vertical cream plaster ribbons on black textured wall painting

Half a dozen cream ribbons of plaster twist up a black square from bottom to top, each combed into fine grooves until it looks like a skein of silk thread. Near the top left one ribbon winds into a tight whorl, like a knot in timber; on the right another doubles back on itself halfway up, and where ribbons split their ends fray into loose strands.

Black shows only in narrow pointed gaps, so the dark ground reads as pattern rather than background. Nothing in it runs straight, which gives a still format a strong upward pull.
