Cream magnolia blossoms float across a chocolate-brown ground like cut-paper silhouettes, several of them sliced off by the edges of the canvas. The flowers are nearly flat shapes, each laid with a knife in visible streaks so the cream has its own grain, joined by slim mauve-brown branches and small reddish sepals.

The brown ground is the textured part: thick, mottled and pitted, closer to rammed earth than to smooth paint. Large blooms sit at the top and centre right, smaller buds lower down, with generous dark space left between them.
