About this painting

One white poppy opens high on a slim upright canvas, its petals so thin that the grey shading behind them shows through like tissue paper. A fine gold line catches the rim of each petal, and the centre is a dark knot of slate blue with a burst of gold stamens.

A single pale stem falls almost the full height, with three feathery gold grass blades leaning in beside it. The ground is a soft mist of pale grey with faint blue and blush, brushed smooth. The lower two-thirds hold only stem and grass, and that open space makes the flower look weightless.
