About this painting

A single white magnolia bloom, so large that the canvas edges crop it, fills the upper left corner of a plain sand-beige ground. From a knot beneath the flower, white stems spread in long ribbon strokes: one climbs to the top right with slim pointed leaves, one runs flat to the right edge and one bends down towards the lower corner, past a small closed bud.

The petals are brushed in quick, streaky white that thins where the brush ran dry, letting the beige show through. Most of the lower half is left bare.
