About this painting

A broad field of white steps down through the middle of the canvas in a series of ledges, held between pale grey bands at the top and bottom that look like weathered concrete. Faint ruled lines in the upper band suggest stone blocks, and a thin grey-green line drops through the centre into the lower band.

Clouds of sprayed grey speckle soften the upper right, gather under one ledge and mark a small patch at the left, so the white dissolves at its edges instead of sitting in a hard box. Washes of thinned paint give the whole surface a chalky finish.

How are the speckled edges made?

By spraying and spattering: fine droplets of grey paint are dusted over the margins of the white shapes so they break into a misty speckle. The heaviest spray sits at the upper right, where the white almost turns to cloud.

Will it read from across a large room?
