About this painting

Two tiny figures stand on a wet, mirror-bright beach while a tower of cream and gold cloud rises above them and fills most of the canvas. The horizon sits a little below the middle, and blue-gray weather crowds in at both edges, framing the lit core of the cloud.

Below the horizon the sand repeats the sky upside down: a long column of reflected light runs from the walkers toward the bottom edge, broken into flat knife-laid patches of ochre, white and pale blue. Paint is heaviest in the cloud tops, where small raised flecks of white catch the light.

Who is walking along the shore in IA#080?

Two unnamed walkers, painted as dark upright strokes with a smaller mark beside them that may be a dog. They set the scale: without them the shore would read as an abstract band of light, and with them the cloud overhead becomes enormous.
