About this painting

A deep slate-navy channel snakes diagonally from the top left to the lower right, edged on both sides by white and pale grey marbling, like a river seen from high above. Along its banks the colour breaks into sandy, speckled patches of silver-grey, the largest just below the middle at right.

The white areas are not plain: fine grey veins curl through them like the pattern in polished marble. The darkest navy, at the two ends of the channel, has a faint mottled grain, and all the movement runs on the diagonal, so the picture feels as if it is flowing.
