About this painting

White cloud forms surge up the middle of a tall blue canvas, and a ragged seam of gold runs down the left side beside them. The blues deepen toward the corners, almost navy in the upper right corner and again at bottom left, so the pale centre seems lit from within. Most of the surface is softly blended, but the brightest whites carry small knife-laid ridges.

The gold is broken rather than solid: flecked and scraped, with darker blue showing through it at mid-height, which keeps the warm note from turning into a stripe.
