About this painting

A copper-tan wave rises from the lower left and curls to the right beneath a heap of white cloud, all of it set against a deep slate-teal sky.

The cloud is built from short, rounded strokes stacked like scallop shells, white edged with pale blue, while the wave is pulled in long curved sweeps of tan, rose and cream that follow its arc. Between them a band of oatmeal paint blurs the join, so cloud and water merge. The paint lies thickest in the cloud and along the crest of the wave. Teal shows only across the top and in the lower right corner.

Is AA#141 a seascape or a sky?

Both readings work. The tan sweep can be a breaking wave, a sand dune or the lip of a shell, and the white mass above it a cloud or a burst of spray. Nothing is drawn literally, so the painting sits in a spa or bedroom without turning the room nautical.

How do the cloud strokes of AA#141 look in side light?
