About this painting

Cobalt and ultramarine waves rise in rows across the lower two thirds of the square, their crests curling over and edged in gold, beneath a pale sky that opens like a gap in cloud. In the upper right a large patch of gold spreads as if sunlight were breaking through, its lower edge dissolving into scattered gold drops above the sea.

The blue is laid on thickly and swirled with the brush, lighter strokes following each curl, and three thin gold lines trace the wave rows like light running along the water.
