About this painting

Three white magnolias open across a wide canvas packed edge to edge with leaves, each bloom a cup of thick, knife-laid petals around a small yolk-yellow centre. There is almost no background: lime, sage, mint and bottle-green leaves overlap like shingles, cut in flat planes with crisp edges.

The upper strip is paler and cooler, with aqua leaves and apricot buds drifting along the top edge, and the colour deepens toward the lower right into dark green shadow. The magnolias sit on a gentle line through the middle as the brightest notes in the picture.
