About this painting

A rough gold field and a deep navy one meet along a jagged edge, like a coastline seen from the air, and fine white lines ripple across the navy side in tight, branching contours.

The lines run in two long diagonals with shorter strands peeling off them, so the pattern reads as both a topographic map and the veins of a huge leaf. Each line stands proud of the ground as a thin piped ridge. The gold is the opposite in character: crinkled, pitted and mottled, with a soft sheen and bronze shadow pooling toward the lower left.
