About this painting

Six sage green banana leaves fan upward from the bottom edge of a long panoramic canvas, their tips stopping short of the top so a wide band of rough white ground stays open above them. Thin pale slashes run out from several midribs, the splits that real banana leaves pick up in the wind. The leaves are brushed and knifed in soft matte green, darker near the stems and paler where an edge turns over, with streaks that follow the veins.

The cluster leans toward the left, leaving more air on the right. Behind it the white is pitted and speckled like rendered wall.

Why are there white streaks inside the leaves of TA#146?

They stand for the tears that open along banana leaves as they age and catch the wind. Painted as thin pale slashes running out from the midrib, they break up the large green shapes and repeat the white of the background inside each leaf, so the cluster looks lighter.

How does the white background of TA#146 look in person?

Rough and granular, closer to a rendered wall than to smooth paint. Small pits and raised flecks cover the whole ground, which stops the open area above the leaves from looking blank and gives it a soft, shadowed grain when light crosses it from one end.
