Two pale hummingbirds hang in a smoky charcoal dark, one high on the right with its beak turned left, the other lower down and angled up towards it, as though the pair were circling.

Their wings are left soft and blurred, so the birds seem caught mid-beat rather than posed, and their bodies glow a cool grey-white. The ground is not flat black: it clouds between slate, blue-black and soot, with a lighter haze around the birds. The whole lower third is empty dark, which gives the pair room to move and keeps the picture quiet.
