Spikes of white rise from the bottom of a black canvas in ragged peaks, like frost climbing a dark window or a pine ridge under snow. The tallest reach almost halfway up on the left, and the fringe drops lower towards the right, so the border between light and dark runs downhill.

Each spike is built from fine vertical strokes, soft grey at the tips and solid white at the base. The black above is not one flat colour either: dry vertical brushing leaves faintly lighter streaks through it, which keeps the large dark area alive.
