About this painting

Pink, peach and cream blooms rise in a loose column right of centre on a khaki-gold ground, crowned by a feathery magenta spray and finished at the base in dark green leaves. Every petal comes from one heavily loaded stroke, pushed thick so its edges stand up and catch the light.

A crimson flower low on the right and a few blue-white blossoms give the warm mass its sharper notes, while lime leaves at the left edge melt into the ground. The upper left stays open ochre, so the bouquet seems to lean and keep growing upward rather than sit in a vase.
