About this painting

A face is reduced to a few flat shapes: a forest green cheek and brow, one closed eye drawn as a single curved black stroke, and pale lips that jut into the green from the cream half of the head. A thick black band sweeps around the left side like hair and curls in toward the chin, while black bars stand along the right.

The ground is a chalky cream, brushed dry so faint streaks and grey scuffs show, which gives the empty areas a worn, handmade surface. The green neck runs off the bottom left edge, and a black block at the base squares the figure off.
