About this painting

Charcoal brackets, bars and hooked strokes tumble down a warm cream ground in AA#263, scattered thickly at the top and settling into one heavy open square near the bottom.

Between the dark marks lie softer washes of taupe, warm grey and beige, plus small streaks of rust and dusty mauve that only show up close. Much of the brushwork is dry, so strokes break into scratchy edges where the bristles skipped across the weave. There is no single centre: the eye hops from mark to mark, and the open square with the long bar beneath it gives that movement a base to land on.
