A dark fish turns in the lower right of a hazy golden-brown field, tail flicked upward, while a single thin line drops from a short dark bar near the top and runs almost to the bottom edge.

Everything is blended in soft horizontal strokes, ochre and olive at the top warming to mustard and a pale rosy beige through the middle, so the water seems to shimmer rather than lie still. The fish is the only firm shape, and even its fins blur into the field. A wide stretch of empty colour separates it from the line, so the fish seems to circle the line rather than take it.
