About this painting

A deep brick-red square sits just above the middle of a white canvas, cut into three pieces by two thin lines that wander in from the edges.

The trick is the colour of those lines. Outside the square each is drawn in dark red, but as soon as it crosses into the block it turns white, like a crack showing the ground beneath. One line drops from the top edge and curves out to the left; the other enters from the right, rises to a small peak and bends down to the lower edge. The red itself shifts slightly, lighter at top right and deeper toward the base.

Why do the lines in MA#004 change colour inside the square?

Each line is dark red where it crosses the white ground and white where it crosses the red block, so it always shows as a contrast instead of disappearing. That swap makes the square look split into three interlocking pieces, a little like a cracked tile, while the dark lines outside tie the shape to the canvas edges.

How does the brick red of MA#004 shift between lamplight and daylight?
