About this painting

A broad stroke of bottle green falls the full height of the canvas, wide at the top and fraying into wisps where it meets a pale grey-white field on the right. Down the left edge runs a narrow column of gold, broken near the bottom by jagged black marks and a few shards of green, so the sharpest contrast sits low on the left.

The green is laid on with a loaded brush, its edges streaked with white where the bristles ran dry. The right third is left almost bare: thin grey washes that trickle downward like water stains on plaster.
