Three bands stack down the canvas: a solid black lid, a broad field of warm grey and a soft off-white base, each meeting the next on a clean horizontal edge. A thin line of white slips between the black and the grey, like light showing under a door.

The grey is the largest band and carries a fine horizontal brush grain, so close up it has the look of brushed fabric. The white below is slightly uneven, with faint cloudy patches, while the black is dense and even. Darkest but narrowest, the black never overpowers the lighter areas beneath it.
