About this painting

More than a dozen open poppies, in red, tangerine, yellow, magenta, pink and plum, float face-on across a deep teal ground with no horizon anywhere.

Without sky or field the canvas works as an all-over pattern: the flowers are spaced fairly evenly, none dominating, and attention moves from bloom to bloom rather than into depth. Each is thick, sculpted knife work with a dark centre ringed by golden stamens. The teal behind them is streaked with cobalt and flicks of white, and a fringe of green leaves runs along the bottom edge. The largest, a magenta and violet flower, sits just below the middle.
