About this painting

Pale blossoms crowd a square canvas in blush pink, cream and dove grey, with dark navy petals breaking through at the upper left and pooling into a heavy shadow at the lower left.

Nothing is drawn: each flower is a cluster of short knife strokes, and only a few dabs of ochre at the centres and one small green leaf near the top tell you they are blooms. The thick paint leaves soft raised edges on the petals. The top right corner is almost white, so the picture tips from dark at the lower left to light at the upper right.

Why are there dark navy patches among the pale blooms of AA#084?

They give the soft palette its depth. Without them, blush, cream and grey would blur into one pale field; the navy at the upper left and the heavy mass at the lower left act as shadow, push the light blooms forward and give a designer a dark colour to pick up in cushions or a rug.
