About this painting

Lilac petals seem to open from a pale cream centre, though no single flower is drawn: the bloom is built from loose sweeps of translucent purple, blade-shaped green leaves and small maroon flicks.

Thin dark lines arc across the canvas like stems bending in wind and tie the scattered strokes together. The washes are layered so earlier purples show through later ones, and a faint yellow haze warms the upper right edge. A margin of white ground is left around the whole cluster, which keeps it airy, while the deepest greens settle toward the lower left.
