How big is an XL painting for a Spanish sofa wall?
Usually 150–180 cm (59–71 in) wide: two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width, never wider, hung 10–15 cm above its back with its centre near eye level.
Spanish decorating magazines now tell readers to swap the gallery wall for one large canvas. El Mueble named the single XL painting over the sofa the living-room trend of 2025, and Hola.com put it plainly: one big painting decorates better than many small ones. The XL works in El Mueble's living rooms include a 150 × 100 cm (59 × 39 in) grey canvas by the Madrid painter Covadonga Tellaeche and pieces of 165 × 132 cm (65 × 52 in) and 180 × 118 cm (71 × 46 in).
To size yours, keep the canvas narrower than the sofa and 10–15 cm above its back, with its centre at eye level, about 150–155 cm (59–61 in) from the floor. Over a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, that means a canvas roughly 150–165 cm (59–65 in) wide. Browse horizontal works and art for living rooms.
Wall art size guide for Spain, wall by wall, in cm and inches
Read the ceiling first and the furniture second: each row gives a canvas size for a wall that Spanish homes, hotels and offices really have, and every size can be painted larger or smaller to fit yours.
Sizes are for the canvas; unless a row says otherwise, hang the centre about 150–155 cm (59–61 in) from the floor.

What wall art size fits a piso with 2.50 m ceilings?
Over the sofa, a canvas up to about 100 cm (39 in) high and 120–165 cm (47–65 in) wide; in a hallway, where the ceiling may drop to 2.20 m, verticals of 50–80 cm (20–31 in) wide.
Spain's building code sets 2.50 m as the minimum free height in a home, and 2.20 m in kitchens, bathrooms and corridors. Under 2.50 m the arithmetic is short: a sofa back stands about 85 cm high; add 15 cm of air, leave 40–50 cm under the ceiling, and you have 100–110 cm (39–43 in) of height. Hence a horizontal of about 160 × 100 cm (63 × 39 in) over a long sofa, or a square of 100–120 cm (39–47 in) over a short one.
New flats are compact, averaging 105.9 m² in the building permits of December 2025, so one well-sized canvas per wall does more than several small ones. See art for entrance halls and square works.
How much bigger should a painting be under a 3.5 m ceiling in Madrid, Barcelona or Palma?
Wider and taller, but hung no higher: keep the bottom edge just above the sofa and let the canvas grow upwards, to 180–250 cm (71–98 in) wide and up to 180 cm (71 in) high.
The pisos señoriales of central Madrid are a different room. A 680 m² whole-floor apartment in Recoletos, listed in 2025, had ceilings above 3.5 m, and a 300 m² Salamanca flat by the designer Marisa Gallo keeps a large salón and a separate formal dining room: two walls to dress. In Barcelona, a Noucentista mansion in Pedralbes pairs 300 m² floors with high ceilings, and even a 92 m² flat in Palma's Santa Catalina has 3.7 m ceilings.
Under those heights a 160 × 100 cm canvas looks like a postcard. Eye level does not rise with the ceiling, so give the extra height to the canvas, not the hook: keep the bottom edge 10–15 cm above the sofa back and choose 180–250 cm (71–98 in) wide and 120–180 cm (47–71 in) high. Where salón and dining room are one open room, as in a renovated flat on Calle Juan Bravo, a long panoramic holds the whole wall; either side of a fireplace, a matched pair of verticals 60–90 cm (24–35 in) wide keeps the symmetry.
What size of large wall art fills a double-height villa hall on the Costa del Sol?
A vertical canvas of 200–300 cm (79–118 in), a stacked pair or a triptych, hung so it reads from the landing above as well as from the hall.
On the Costa del Sol the double-height volume is a selling point. Villa listings in El Madroñal, Benahavís, advertise 'techos de doble altura' and a 'vestíbulo de doble altura', and Villa Niwa in La Reserva de Sotogrande was marketed on its double-height lounge with a fireplace. Two storeys of at least 2.50 m, plus the floor between them, make a wall of well over 5 m.
Against that height a 150 cm canvas reads as a stamp. Go vertical: one canvas 200–300 cm (79–118 in) tall, two stacked, or a triptych, with the centre at about 180–220 cm (71–87 in) so it reads from the door and from the landing. La Zagaleta treats each villa as a blank canvas for its owner and hand-picked stylists to furnish, so measure the void once the stair and lighting are in. Traditional Sotogrande villas, built around patios with arches, stucco and timber beams, have many medium walls instead, each suited to 100–150 cm (39–59 in). See villa projects and Spanish villas and homes, room by room.
What size suits a glass-walled coastal villa or a Mallorca finca?
In a villa with glass on the view side, a panoramic of 200–250 cm (79–98 in) on the one solid wall; in a stone or render finca, one work of 120–180 cm (47–71 in), taller where the ceiling rises above 4 m.
On the coast and the islands, the view takes the glass. Contemporary Mallorca villas sell on open layouts, glass walls and large terraces, an Ibiza house above Cala Jondal gives its upper bedroom-salon a 180-degree sea view, and the architects of one Sotogrande villa call its picture window an artwork in itself. That leaves one solid wall per room: give it a panoramic of 200–250 cm (79–98 in) wide and 80–100 cm (31–39 in) high.
Fincas work at a gentler scale. Mallorcan country houses pair modest built areas with very large plots, and their rooms are finished in marés stone, lime and pale render. Most finca rooms take one work of 120–180 cm (47–71 in); where the living room opens up, as in Finca Sonrisa near Randa, whose ceilings rise over 4 m, a vertical up to 200 cm (79 in) tall fits. Textured canvases sit naturally against lime and stone; hang any canvas out of direct afternoon sun.
What sizes do Spanish hotel rooms, lobbies and offices take?
One horizontal of 100–150 cm (39–59 in) above each headboard, smaller verticals in series for the corridors, and pieces of 2–3 m only where guests or visitors gather.
Spain expects nearly 775 new hotels and about 52,000 rooms between 2025 and 2028, and hotel art is easiest to plan room type by room type. Sir Victor in Barcelona hangs an abstract by Bernat Daviu in each of its 91 rooms: one canvas of 100–150 cm (39–59 in) above the headboard. Landmark scale is kept for the stairs, such as the brass work of 1,500 fragments on the curved wall by the main staircase of Four Seasons Hotel Madrid.
The law firm Uría Menéndez keeps every one of its 200-plus works on display in its offices. Plan 150–250 cm (59–98 in) for a reception wall, 120–180 cm (47–71 in) for a boardroom seen from seated height, and matching canvases of 60–90 cm (24–35 in) for corridors. How do you order a canvas painted to the size of a wall in Spain?
Send a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and the way in; we suggest the size and format, and you approve the canvas from photographs at every stage before it ships.
Start with the four things below. From them we suggest a size and a shortlist from some 1,300 designs, or design a piece for your project; any design can be resized, recoloured to your fabric, tiles or stone, or painted as a set.
When one canvas will not go up the stair, two or three panels painted as one image hang as a single work, the diptych or triptych arranged like a puzzle that Hola.com suggests for large walls. You approve photographs at every stage, and nothing ships until you have approved the final one. More in our Spain wall art guide and on paintings from your own image.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
- The wallIts width, and the width of the sofa, bed or sideboard below it.
- The heightFloor to ceiling, and floor to the top of the sofa back or headboard.
- The way inLift door and depth, the turn of the stair, the front door: this decides rolled, stretched or panels.
- A photographTaken straight on, in daylight, with the measurements written on it.
Wall art size guide for Spain FAQs
Can you paint to a standard canvas size, such as 100 × 81 cm?
Yes. Or give us the wall instead: every iHomeArt piece is painted to order, so the size can follow your room rather than a list of standard formats.
What is the largest painting you can make for a Spanish wall?
Send us a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and how the piece will reach the room, by lift, stair or door. We look at it and suggest the size, format and finish that suit: one large canvas sent rolled and stretched near you, or a two- or three-panel set that hangs as one.
How long does a painting take to reach Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella or Palma?
About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.
What size painting goes above a bed in a Spanish bedroom?
About two-thirds of the bed's width: 100 cm (39 in) for a 150 cm bed, 120 cm (47 in) for a 180 cm bed, hung 20–30 cm above the headboard. A pair of 50–60 cm (20–24 in) canvases suits a bed between two bedside lamps.
Can a painting be matched to my tiles, stone or sofa?
Yes. Send photographs of the fabric, stone or tiles taken in daylight, ideally beside a sheet of white paper, and the palette is mixed to them, whether that is the marés stone, lime render or hydraulic tiles of a Mallorca house. You approve the colours in the stage photographs before painting goes further.
What if the painting turns out the wrong size for my wall?
Settle the size first: tape paper to the wall at the proposed dimensions and look at it from the sofa and the door. Each piece is painted to order and you approve a photograph of it before it ships, so finished pieces are not returnable; transit damage is rare, under 0.01% of pieces, and we take it up with the carrier and work out a solution with you.
