White foam, grey shallows, a ruffled ridge of taupe and a wedge of near-black step diagonally down the canvas, each band combed with fine slanting grooves.

The white band at upper right ends in a crested, scalloped edge that lifts off the surface and throws its own shadow, much like the lip of a wave sliding up sand. The taupe strip is the most heavily worked, pleated paste piled into a ragged rib that starts in the upper-left corner and ends at the bottom edge, just left of centre. The grey and black areas are combed flatter, so the relief climbs toward the upper right.
