About this painting

Three sweeps of combed teal paint wrap around one another to make a single rounded knot, floating in the centre of a sand-coloured ground.

Each sweep is dragged in a different direction: the upper left lobe curls downward, the right lobe runs vertically, and the broad base wraps around in horizontal bands. Where they meet, the ridges collide in a crisp seam that climbs to the top of the form. The paint is laid on thickly enough for every comb line to stand proud, and the crests catch a paler blue-grey along the outer edges. The surrounding ground is smooth and paler toward the top.

Why does MA#009 seem to change as people walk past it?

The three sections are combed in different directions, so light catches their ridges unevenly. As someone moves along the wall, first one lobe and then another flares pale while the rest falls into shadow, and the knot appears to shift and turn slightly. A single fixed light from above makes the effect strongest.

Does MA#009 show a particular object?

No. It is an abstract form that people read variously as folded fabric, a smooth river stone or a coil of rope. What gives it life is the contrast between three directions of combing held inside one closed outline, which puts a lot of movement into an otherwise quiet painting.
