Wall art size guide for Kuwait's diwaniyas, villas and beach chalets

iHomeArt paints original canvases by hand and to the size of your wall for villas, diwaniyas, chalets, offices and hotels across Kuwait, from Kuwait City and Salmiya to Khiran. This wall art size guide gives each Kuwaiti room its canvas size in centimetres and inches, and shows why the diwaniya, the salon and the entrance hall so often need more than 2 metres.

What size painting does a diwaniya wall need?

One panoramic canvas or a three-panel set 200–300 cm (79–118 in) wide, hung low above the sofa backs, because your guests read it seated from the far side of the room.

The diwaniya is a simple four-sided room with seating on each side, so the only free wall is the band above the sofa backs, seen from across the room. Modern diwaniyas span six, twelve and even twenty metres, and a Kuwaiti design-build firm puts luxury ones at 60–120 m².

Two rules of thumb give the size: a painting that anchors a wall is about two-thirds as wide as the sofa run below it, and about half as wide as the distance it is read from. A wall seen from 5–6 m wants 250–300 cm of canvas; under about 150 cm (59 in), a painting looks like an accessory. Keep it 90–120 cm (35–47 in) high under a 3–3.5 m ceiling, and in a grand diwaniya give each long wall its own panoramic. Abstraction, landscape, geometry or a calligrapher's work suit the room better than figures; more on the room in Kuwaiti villas and diwaniyas.

Wall art size guide for Kuwait: which canvas suits each room?

Start from what the room is for: 180–300 cm where guests are received, 150–200 cm for family rooms and dining, 120–160 cm over a bed, and 120 cm or less for flats, studies and corridors.

Kuwaiti houses are taller than most size charts assume: the private-housing rules set a 3 m minimum net floor height and leave each floor's height to the design, and a Kuwaiti architecture practice puts typical floors at 3.0–3.5 m, with 4.5 m double-height receptions. Sizes below are the long side of the canvas and a starting point, since every piece is painted to your wall.

Why does a Kuwaiti villa need more than one statement painting?

Because the diwaniya, the formal salon and the family living room are separate rooms, each with its own guests and its own main wall, so most villas need two or three large canvases rather than one.

Men gather in the diwaniya while women are received in a reception room inside the house, and rental listings repeat the plan: a diwaniya with its own bathroom beside a living room and three or four halls. Even the state's 385 m² citizen apartments have both a salon and a diwaniya. The salon takes a step smaller, 180–250 cm (71–98 in), as its sofas face a coffee table rather than the far wall.

The family living room often opens to the garden, as in AlHumaidhi Architects' Faye House with its full-height sliding glass, leaving one solid wall for 150–200 cm (59–79 in) or a pair; a dining room seating 12, as in one Faiha villa, takes the same. Paint all three in one palette, each at its own size; ten pieces or more reach volume pricing. See art for whole villas.

How tall should a painting be in a double-height entrance or stair void?

Tall: a vertical canvas 200–300 cm (79–118 in) high, or two or three panels stacked along the stair, sized to be read from the front door and again from the half-landing.

One Kuwaiti design-build firm says villa entrances typically reach four metres or more, and a local architecture practice writes that double-height ceilings have always been popular in Kuwaiti villas. Some go further: Studio Toggle's House in Mishref is built around a four-storey void crossed by a suspended stair.

For a double-height hall, one vertical canvas of 200–250 cm (79–98 in) facing the door does the work; in a taller void, stack two or three equal panels up the stair so each landing has its own view. Thickly textured work like the canvas pictured travels stretched or framed rather than rolled, so check the route into the hall before you settle the size.

Large wall art in Kuwait: when should a canvas be wider than 2 metres?

Whenever the wall is longer than about 6 m and read from across the room, which in Kuwait means most diwaniyas, formal salons, entrance voids, basement halls and lobbies.

At the top of the market, one Kuwait City villa has ground-floor ceilings of more than 5 m, and a purpose-built diwaniya in Faiha is a 1,000 m² building with a grand hall for weddings and family occasions. The shelves stop earlier: a resident asking online in 2021 where to buy large paintings had found only a limited choice at a home chain. Above about 2 m, painting to the wall is usually the only way to get size and palette together.

One canvas makes the stronger statement; three panels of the same width are easier to carry up a main stair that may be only 1.2 m wide, or into a lift. For the largest walls, send us the width, ceiling height and way in, and we suggest the size and format; see oversized and custom sizes.

What size suits a basement hall or a beach chalet?

Wide horizontals of 200–300 cm (79–118 in): on the longest windowless wall of a basement, and on the inland walls of a chalet, where the sea side is given to glass.

The basement is often a second reception floor. It may cover the whole plot at a minimum clear height of 2.75 m, it is fitted out as a cinema, gym or games room, and a collector's villa planned in Surra has a basement store that doubles as a gallery at social occasions. Its long, windowless walls take the widest horizontals in the house.

Chalets repeat the villa plan by the sea. Plots in Sabah Al-Ahmad Sea City run from 285 to 700 m², and one Khiran listing describes two '6x10' living rooms: read as metres, that is a 10 m wall seen from about 6 m, for a panoramic of 250–300 cm (98–118 in). Seafront houses such as TAEP/AAP's Tent House give the sea side to glass, so hang on the inland walls, out of direct sun.

What size of wall art suits a Kuwait apartment, office or hotel room?

About 90–120 cm (35–47 in) in a typical investment flat, 150–200 cm in a high-ceilinged duplex, 100–150 cm over a hotel headboard, and 250 cm or more only for lobbies and boardroom walls.

Investment apartments are benchmarked at 100–110 m² for three bedrooms and 60 m² for smaller units, so the living room is seen from 3–4 m: one canvas of 90–120 cm or a pair suits it. A luxury duplex in Salmiya advertised for its high ceilings takes 150–200 cm (59–79 in).

Grand Hyatt Kuwait hangs an abstract above the headboard in its guest rooms, the place for 100–150 cm (39–59 in). Prime towers are another scale: the National Bank of Kuwait's headquarters has an 18 m lobby and a 13 m boardroom table, rooms whose walls want 250 cm (98 in) or more, or a set. More on offices and institutions in Kuwait and Kuwait's hotels and restaurants.

How high should you hang a painting in a room where guests sit?

Lower than in a hall: keep the bottom edge 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above the sofa backs, and in a tall room put the extra height into the canvas, not into bare wall beneath it.

Guests in the diwaniya and the salon see the wall sitting down, so hang from the sofa, not from a fixed height: start the canvas 20–30 cm above the sofa backs, which sit at about 85 cm. That leaves about 1.6–2.1 m of wall in a 3–3.5 m room and about 3 m under a 4.5 m ceiling, which is room for a taller canvas, not a reason to hang a small one higher.

Where people stand or pass, in halls, corridors and dining rooms, centre the work at about 150–160 cm (59–63 in). Plan the light as well: architects surveying houses in Mishref found windows kept closed for privacy and interiors otherwise dark, so fit a picture light or wall washer before the painting arrives.

How do you order a canvas painted to the size of your wall in Kuwait?

Send a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and the way into the room; we suggest the size and format, your quote usually arrives within one business day, and you approve every stage from photographs.

Measure the free width between doors, windows and air-conditioning grilles, the height from the sofa backs to the ceiling, and the narrowest point on the way in. Send that with a photo on WhatsApp; we suggest a size, a format and a shortlist from some 1,300 designs, or design a piece for the room, and can paint one canvas first so you see the scale before the set.

You approve each stage from photographs or video before the next one starts. Larger orders may go by air or sea freight, on the route we find best, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. The overview is in our Kuwait wall art guide.

Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.

Kuwait wall art size FAQs

Do I have to choose a standard canvas size?

No. Every piece is painted by hand to the size you give us. Our designs are listed in common sizes from 61 × 51 cm (24 × 20 in) upwards, and any of them can be resized for your wall, with the composition redrawn for the new proportions, never stretched or cropped.

What size painting goes above a king-size bed?

About two-thirds of the bed's width: for a 180–200 cm king, a canvas of 120–140 cm (47–55 in), hung 20–30 cm (8–12 in) above the headboard. On a wide, panelled headboard wall, a 160 cm (63 in) piece or a pair of verticals also works.

Can one design be painted in different sizes for the villa and the chalet?

Yes. One design can be painted at 250 cm for the diwaniya and at 120 cm for a bedroom, or varied into a series in the same palette for the chalet. Each size is recomposed for its proportions, and you approve every canvas from photographs before it ships.

Can you size paintings for a house that is still being built?

Yes. Send the drawings with the wall widths and ceiling heights, and we suggest a size and format for each wall. Confirm them once the walls are plastered and the lighting is in, as the free wall between doors, switches and grilles is often narrower than the plan suggests.

What is the largest painting you can make for a diwaniya or a lobby?

Send us a photo of the wall with its width, the ceiling height and how the piece will reach the room. We look at it and suggest what suits: one oversized canvas, rolled for the journey and stretched in Kuwait, or two or three panels that hang as one work.

How long does a large canvas take to reach Kuwait?

About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Kuwait City, Salmiya, Ahmadi, Khiran or anywhere else in Kuwait. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before dispatch.
