Where do people buy paintings in Kuwait?
More and more from a phone: Instagram and WhatsApp shops, artists’ own pages and the home chains’ websites sit alongside the galleries, and with no art fair there is no single place to see everything at once.
Ask in Kuwait where to buy a painting and you will probably be sent to Instagram. When a couple wrote on a Kuwait forum in 2016 that they had never seen locally painted art in the souks, the replies pointed them to artists’ Instagram accounts and advised contacting the painters directly. One Kuwaiti illustrator told Kuwait Times in 2025 that she would not have a career without Instagram.
Galleries exist too, more than 20 by Wikipedia’s count, but no art fair was listed for 2026, so the chance to see a lot of work at once comes with group exhibitions, such as the November 2025 show in Al-Ahmadi that gathered 165 artists from Kuwait, the Gulf and beyond. Expect, then, to judge many paintings from photographs, which works well once you know which kind of seller you are talking to.
Mall chain, Instagram shop, artist or gallery: where should you buy paintings in Kuwait?
Match the seller to the wall: a mall chain for a quick standard size, an Instagram shop for a print of a design you have chosen, an artist or gallery for one original you love, and a painting made to order once the wall needs more than about 2 metres or colours of your own.
A buyer who asked a Kuwait forum in 2021 where to find “large paintings that hang on the wall” had already tried a home chain and found its range limited. That is the shape of the market: plenty of choice up to about 1.5 metres, very little beyond 2.
| Kind of seller | What you find | Largest size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home and furniture chains, in the malls and online | Printed canvas, framed prints, factory canvases, some labelled hand-painted | About 2 m at most | An apartment wall, a quick change |
| Instagram and WhatsApp canvas shops | Mostly printed canvas: any design, printed to your size | Large prints on request | A print of a design you have chosen |
| Kuwaiti artists and their studios | Originals: heritage, Sadu motifs, textured abstraction, portraits on commission | Mostly under 1.8 m; the largest often sell out | One original by a painter you can talk to |
| Galleries | Named Kuwaiti and Arab artists, priced on request | The size the artist painted | The piece you collect |
| Framers | Framing and stretching for what you bring | Standard sizes quickly; 2 m and over is a special job | Finishing a rolled canvas |
| Made to order | Any design, size and palette; sets painted in one hand | Painted to the wall | Diwaniya walls, tall entrances, whole villas, office floors |
Work backwards from the wall. A framed print for a Salmiya flat is a mall purchase; a canvas that spans the diwaniya, or eight pieces that belong together, needs one of the last two rows. The country overview is in our Kuwait wall art guide.
Printed or painted: what are you really buying from a canvas shop in Kuwait?
Often a print: the Arabic word لوحات covers printed and painted work alike, so ask every seller whether a piece is مطبوعة (printed) or مرسومة يدوياً (painted by hand) before you pay.
Kuwaiti buyers search for لوحات كانفس حسب الطلب, canvas paintings made to order, and the biggest canvas accounts on Instagram do just that: they print any design at the size you ask for and settle the details on WhatsApp. A print is fine if you know you are buying one; the trouble is the word. لوحات means printed and painted pictures alike, and a “hand-painted” label in a home chain can sit on a factory canvas priced much like the prints beside it. Ask four things before you pay:
- Printed or painted? In so many words: مطبوعة أو مرسومة يدوياً؟
- Which paint, on what? Acrylic or oil, on canvas or on board.
- A photograph in side light. Brush and knife marks cast small shadows; a print stays flat.
- How it travels. Rolled, stretched or framed, and what happens if it arrives damaged.
With iHomeArt nothing is printed: every canvas is painted by hand, and you see photographs or video of each stage, with a side-lit shot of the texture if you want one, before you approve the next. See our textured paintings.
Can you buy paintings directly from Kuwaiti artists?
Yes, and it is often the best way to own a local original: painters sell through Instagram, exhibitions and their own studios, and some take commissions, though few work at the scale of a diwaniya wall.
Kuwait’s painters are easy to reach. They show at group exhibitions, at Sadu House and at public summer shows such as the culture council’s July 2025 exhibition of 38 works by 30 artists. One paints layered acrylics on linen, keeping some simple “to suit modern interiors”; a November 2025 show at Sadu House displayed commissioned family portraits. Heritage is the classic subject, from pearl diving and old ships to Sadu motifs, though one watercolourist has tired of the heritage boat painted yet again as a “tilted jalboot”.
The market is quieter than the talent. At a November 2025 symposium reported by Al Rai, a former secretary-general of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters said many artists had stopped exhibiting for lack of buyers, and Shurooq Amin told Kuwait Times that every Kuwaiti artist she knows has another job. Buy from an artist when you want their hand and their subject. For six canvases in one palette by a fixed date, hang one artist’s piece where guests will see it and have the rest painted to order around it.
What do art galleries in Kuwait offer someone furnishing a home?
Named Kuwaiti and Arab artists, seen in person and priced on request: the right place for the one piece you collect, less so for a canvas cut to the size of a wall.
Kuwait opened what Wikipedia calls the Gulf’s first professional Arab art gallery in 1969, and its galleries still deal in named Kuwaiti and Arab painters, priced on request. Several sit in Shuwaikh Industrial’s Design District beside high-end furniture showrooms. Expect clothed figures, heritage, calligraphy and abstraction: the director of one long-running gallery said in 2012 that nudity and religious themes could not be shown.
See the museums as well. Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, the Tareq Rajab Museum, Sadu House and the Mirror House, home of the painter Khalifa Alqattan, show the geometry, calligraphy and pattern that shape Kuwaiti taste. A gallery sells a work at the size the artist chose, so for a villa a practical mix is one gallery piece on the wall guests remember, and canvases made to order in the same palette for the rest.
Which walls in a Kuwaiti home are beyond what the shops sell?
The diwaniya’s long wall, the double-height entrance, any wall that needs more than about 2 metres of canvas, and rooms that call for your own colours, a matching set or a subject that is yours alone.
Kuwaiti villas are built for receiving guests: the diwaniya and formal reception sit by the main entrance with their own access, and one architect notes that double-height ceilings have always been popular in Kuwaiti villas. Scaled from its published plan, the grand hall of a purpose-built diwaniya in Faiha runs roughly 14 to 18 metres by 9 to 12; against walls like that, a 1.5-metre canvas from the mall reads as an accessory. The walls compete with architecture too, from travertine and marble feature walls to mashrabiya-style screens, so size and colour matter more than in a plain white room.
Plan the art with the interior. Mirzaam Expo, which bills itself as Kuwait’s largest interior-design exhibition, has 57 categories and none of them is art, so raising the art brief is up to you; with a full villa interior taking four to nine months, there is time to paint a set while the joinery goes in. For your family house, a Gulf view or your crest, see paintings from your own image; for a verse, start from a calligrapher’s artwork used with their permission, and have a native reader check the stage photographs. Sizes wall by wall are in the Kuwait size guide, room by room in villas and diwaniyas.

How do you buy a painting for a Kuwaiti wall from iHomeArt?
Send a photo of the wall and its width on WhatsApp; we suggest a size and designs or design one for you, and you approve each stage from photographs before the canvas ships, rolled or stretched and ready to hang.
Kuwaiti homes are often furnished from abroad already: villas have been designed by London studios, and one Khaldiya house had its paintings chosen with the help of a gallery in Spain. Ordering from us starts with the wall: a photograph, its width and the ceiling height are enough. We suggest a size and a shortlist from some 1,300 designs, or design a piece for your project, and paint one canvas first if you want to see it before the rest of a set.
Choose the finish for the journey. Stretched or framed arrives ready to hang, and heavily textured or plaster work always travels that way; a Kuwait moving firm offers picture hanging in Kuwait City, Salmiya and Fahaheel. Larger orders may go by air or sea freight, on the route we find best for your address, with the shipping cost confirmed before dispatch. Palettes that suit Kuwaiti rooms are in Kuwait taste and styles.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
Buying paintings in Kuwait FAQs
Can you paint a larger version of a design I saw on Instagram or in a Kuwait shop?
If the design is an artist’s work still in copyright, we need the rights holder’s permission first; a work long out of copyright, such as a Van Gogh, we can paint by hand at your wall’s size. Otherwise, send a photo of what you liked and of the wall, and we suggest catalogue designs in the same spirit or design a new piece.
How long does a painting take to reach Kuwait?
About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to Kuwait City, Salmiya, Jahra, Ahmadi, Al-Khiran or any other address in Kuwait. Larger orders may travel by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.
Can I order just one painting for a flat in Salmiya or Kuwait City?
Yes. The minimum order is one piece, and it can double as a sample if you plan more. Flats in Kuwait’s investment areas are often about 70 to 135 square metres, where a canvas of about 80 to 120 cm usually suits the sofa wall. Volume pricing starts at ten pieces.
Do you paint Sadu patterns, Kuwaiti heritage scenes or Arabic calligraphy?
Yes, from the right starting point. The catalogue has geometric works in the reds, blacks and beiges of Sadu weaving; a heritage scene can be painted from your own photograph, and calligraphy from a calligrapher’s artwork, used with their permission and checked by a native reader. Send us the image and the wall, and we suggest the size, format and finish.
How do I pay for a painting ordered from Kuwait?
Half upfront against a proforma invoice, so painting can start, and the other half once you approve the photograph of the finished piece, before it ships. Your quote, priced for your sizes and finishes, usually arrives within one business day of your message on WhatsApp, through the quote form or by email.
What happens if a painting arrives damaged in Kuwait?
It is rare: under 0.01% of pieces. Send us photographs and we take it up with the carrier and work out a solution with you, such as a replacement or a refund. Because every piece is painted to order and you approve a photograph of the finished canvas before it ships, finished pieces are not returnable.
