About this painting

Ribbons of mustard yellow and near-black plum twist across the middle of a turquoise canvas, folding back on themselves like ink stirred into water. The plum forms a dark river through the centre and the mustard clings to its banks, so every turn of the dark band is outlined in hot yellow.

Turquoise opens out above and in the lower right, clear and cool. In the lower left the yellow muddies to olive and khaki, freckled with tiny cells, and a tight eddy of copper lines curls in the bottom right corner. Every part of it dries to the same even gloss.

Which colour in AA#004 should the room around it pick up?

Mustard or turquoise, but rarely both at full strength. Echoing the mustard in a chair or cushions warms the room; matching the turquoise on the walls makes the yellow ribbons stand out. Keep the plum for small dark accents such as a side table or lamp base.

Is the dark colour in AA#004 black or purple?

Purple. Close up, the river through the middle is a deep plum, almost aubergine, and only reads as black from further away. Warm light brings its purple out more clearly, which links it to the mustard far better than true black would.
