About this painting

A sweep of white and pale aqua marble curves down across the canvas and breaks against a darker band of slate and navy, like the cut edge of an agate. At the very top the paint turns frothy, with peach, sky blue and fine gold threads twisting through cloudy white, the busiest corner of the work.

Below the seam the blues lie in wavy strata that deepen toward the bottom, then open into a patch of gold low on the left. Throughout, the paint is smooth and fluid. The gold lines do the drawing, two of them running side by side along the edge where light meets dark.
