About this painting

A channel of deep indigo rises on a diagonal from the lower left corner and thins into pale sky blue near the top right, like a river glimpsed from high above. Cream and ivory fields press in on both sides, wider on the left.

The blue has no hard edges. It bleeds and marbles into the cream, turning turquoise and mint at its upper reaches, while flecks of gold cling along its banks and drift into the pale ground at the top. The paint carries a fine, sandy grain rather than heavy ridges, which keeps the surface soft.
