Wall art size guide for US rooms, from sofa wall to two-storey foyer
iHomeArt paints original canvases by hand and to order for homes, designers, hotels and offices across the United States, at the size the wall needs rather than the nearest stock size. This wall art size guide turns American rooms, from the 9-ft living room and the king bed to the two-storey foyer, into canvas sizes in inches and centimetres.

How big should wall art be over a couch?
About two-thirds of the sofa's width: roughly 48 in (122 cm) of canvas over a 72-inch sofa, 56 in (142 cm) over an 84-inch one, and a panoramic or a pair over a sectional.
The sofa wall is the first wall most people dress, and the one most often given a canvas too small. One designer told Veranda that art has increasingly become the starting point of a living room, not its last touch. Measure the sofa, not the wall: aim for 60–75% of its width, the lower edge 6–10 in (15–25 cm) above the sofa back.
- 72 in (183 cm) sofa: about 48 × 36 in (122 × 91 cm).
- 84 in (213 cm) sofa: about 56 × 40 in (142 × 102 cm).
- 96 in (244 cm) sofa: about 64 × 44 in (163 × 112 cm).
- Sectional of 110–130 in (280–330 cm): a panoramic of 80 × 40 in (203 × 102 cm), or a pair of 36 × 48 in (91 × 122 cm) verticals.
The familiar stock sizes of 24 × 36 and 30 × 40 in cover well under half of an 84-inch sofa, which is why so many living rooms look under-dressed. Browse living-room paintings and panoramic works.
What wall art size suits a queen or king bed?
About two-thirds of the bed's width: around 40 in (102 cm) over a queen, 48 in (122 cm) over a California king and 50–54 in (127–137 cm) over a king, hung 8–12 in above the headboard.
American beds come in fixed widths, which makes the bedroom the easiest wall to size: a queen is 60 in (152 cm) wide, a California king 72 in (183 cm), a standard king 76 in (193 cm). A canvas two-thirds as wide stays clear of the bedside lamps; hang it 8–12 in (20–30 cm) above the headboard, out of the way when you sit up.
Then check the height: primary suites in new houses often have a tray ceiling, as in one Dallas-area plan, which leaves room for a canvas 40–48 in (102–122 cm) tall. Under the 8-ft ceilings common upstairs, keep it nearer 30–36 in (76–91 cm) tall, or hang a pair of smaller verticals, one above each bedside table. See bedroom paintings.

How big should a painting be above a fireplace, console or sideboard?
Narrower than what it hangs over: about two-thirds to three-quarters of the mantel, console or sideboard, its lower edge 6–10 in (15–25 cm) above it, and a little lower in a dining room, where people sit.
Over a fireplace, keep the canvas inside the mantel shelf: a 60 in (152 cm) mantel takes a painting about 40–45 in (102–114 cm) wide. Without a shelf, leave at least 6 in (15 cm) of chimney breast on each side; if the television already hangs there, give the painting the next wall. Consoles and sideboards follow the same rule: about 48 in (122 cm) over a 72 in (183 cm) sideboard.
In a dining room, lower the centre to about 54–56 in (137–142 cm) from the floor, because the painting is seen from the table. Formal rooms take more: pre-war Manhattan apartments usually keep a separate dining room, and at the Apthorp some measure 16 × 24 ft (4.9 × 7.3 m), a long wall for 60 in (152 cm) of canvas or more. See dining-room paintings.
Wall art size guide by ceiling height: 8, 9 and 10 ft rooms
The ceiling sets the tallest canvas a wall can hold: over a sofa, about 36–40 in (91–102 cm) of height under an 8-ft ceiling, up to 48 in (122 cm) under 9 ft, and 60 in (152 cm) or more from 10 ft up.
Start with the ceiling. The American rule of thumb is 9 ft (2.74 m) on a new first floor, 8 ft (2.44 m) on many upper floors and in many houses of the 1970s and 80s, and from about 13 ft (4 m) under a vaulted or cathedral ceiling. Pre-war Manhattan apartments reach 10 ft (3 m) or more, the new towers of Billionaires' Row 14 ft (4.3 m).
Over a sofa, the space for art starts about 42 in (107 cm) from the floor; leave a band of wall above the canvas at least as deep as the gap below it. On an open wall, centre the painting 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor and let the ceiling decide how tall it grows.

What size painting does a two-storey foyer or great room need?
Size it to the wall, not the furniture: a vertical of 72 in (183 cm) or more on the foyer or stair wall, and 72–100 in (183–254 cm) across a great-room fireplace wall, or a stacked pair or a set of three.
The great room, its ceiling often two storeys high, has been common in American houses since the early 1990s. A Houston-area home pairs a two-storey foyer and great room with a 15-ft (4.6 m) sliding glass wall to the patio, which leaves the fireplace wall and the stair wall as the only tall walls for art.
On a home-design forum, one owner with a 20 × 11 ft (6.1 × 3.4 m) foyer wall was weighing a horizontal piece 7 ft wide and 4 ft tall; a designer replied, “Vertical art for this location, not horizontal”. The top answer in an older thread calls “undramatic, small art” one of the biggest mistakes in a vaulted foyer. Give such a wall a canvas a third to half its width, hung to read from the door and the landing. See oversized wall art.
What size art suits a New York or Miami apartment?
In a pre-war room, a vertical between the windows or a canvas sized to the mantel; in a post-war flat, a long panoramic under the lower ceiling; in a Miami condo, the foyer and the solid wall facing the view.
In an apartment, the question is which wall. Post-war Manhattan living rooms run 20–30 ft (6–9 m) long under ceilings of about 9 ft, so the long wall takes a panoramic 60–96 in (152–244 cm) wide and 30–40 in (76–102 cm) tall. Pre-war rooms are higher but broken by windows, fireplaces and built-ins: hang verticals of 48–72 in (122–183 cm) between them. In a new tower such as One57, a full-floor salon can run 56 ft (17 m) under 12-ft ceilings, room for the largest canvas in the home.
In Miami, new towers such as The Perigon wrap their homes in terraces 10–12 ft (3–3.7 m) deep, so the view side belongs to the windows and the art goes in the private foyer, which every home at Four Seasons Private Residences Coconut Grove has, and on the solid wall opposite. A short-term-rental studio needs one piece of 24–36 in (61–91 cm), varied from unit to unit. More on American homes and condos.
What sizes do US lobbies, offices and hotel rooms take?
A lobby takes one canvas of 96 in (244 cm) or more, a guest room 36–50 in (91–127 cm) over the bed, and a corridor a series of 24–36 in (61–91 cm) pieces hung at one height.
For a Washington law firm, the architects commissioned a 10 × 13 ft (3 × 4 m) abstract for the lobby beside reception; a Manhattan office building hung two 52 × 76 in (132 × 193 cm) oils on its amenities floor. A reception wall read from the door takes one canvas of 96 in (244 cm) or more.
Hotels size by room type: 36–50 in (91–127 cm) over the bed, clear of the headboard lights, and a series of 24–36 in (61–91 cm) works in the corridors, the same size and height on every floor. We size each room type once and label every canvas by room and position. See lobby statement art and US hotels and restaurants.

Wall art size guide at a glance, in inches and centimetres
Measure the furniture or the wall, take about two-thirds of it, and check the height against the ceiling; the chart gives the usual answer for each American room.
Sizes are width × height, for standard American sofa and bed widths and the usual 9 ft downstairs and 8 ft upstairs. Each is a starting point: every iHomeArt canvas is painted to the dimensions you give us.

Can a painting be made to the exact size of your wall in the US?
Yes: send the wall's width, the ceiling height and a photo, and we suggest a size in inches and centimetres, paint the canvas to it and show you every stage in photographs.
Stock sizes suit shelves, not walls. If a design you like is listed at 36 × 48 in and your sofa wants 56 × 40 in, we redraw the composition for the new proportions rather than stretch it, and you approve each stage from photographs. Choose from some 1,300 catalogue designs, have one designed for your project or send your own image.
Size also decides how the canvas travels. FedEx caps a parcel at 150 lb, 108 in (274 cm) in length and 130 in (330 cm) in length plus girth; anything larger moves as freight. Heavily textured work travels stretched or framed, ready to hang. More in our US wall art guide.
Each canvas can travel stretched and ready to hang, framed, or rolled; a rolled canvas, the lightest and most economical way to send a large painting, arrives without stretcher bars, and any local framer can stretch it for you.
US wall art size guide FAQs
Is it better to choose wall art too big or too small?
Too big, almost always. A canvas that is too small looks like an afterthought, especially under a 9-ft or higher ceiling; one a little too large reads as a statement. Torn between two sizes? Tape both outlines on the wall, photograph them and take the larger, unless it crowds a window or door.
What are the standard canvas sizes in the US, and do I have to pick one?
The familiar stock sizes are 24 × 36, 30 × 40, 36 × 48 and 48 × 60 in (61 × 91, 76 × 102, 91 × 122 and 122 × 152 cm). You need not pick one: every iHomeArt canvas is painted to order, so 56 × 40 in for an 84-inch sofa is as easy to order as a standard size.
Should I hang one large painting or a set of two or three?
One canvas when the wall is unbroken and a single piece can reach the room. A pair or a set of three when the furniture is long, a door or window splits the wall, or one canvas would be awkward to carry up a stair. Painted in one hand, a set reads as one work; leave 3–4 in (8–10 cm) between panels.
Does a frame change the size I should order?
Yes, so tell us which size you mean. A frame adds width on every side, which matters over a mantel or between windows. Give us the space the finished piece must fit and the frame you want, gold, silver, black, white or wood, and we size the canvas.
How long does a painting made to size take to reach the United States?
About 10 days to paint, then 5–7 days by DHL, FedEx or UPS express to any US address. Larger orders may go by air or sea freight instead; we choose the best route for your address and confirm the shipping cost before anything leaves.
What is the largest painting you can make for a two-storey wall?
Send us a photo of the wall with its width and height, and tell us how the canvas will reach it: front door, stair or lift. We look at it and suggest the size, format and finish that suit: one oversized canvas, sent rolled and stretched near you, or a stacked pair or set of three that hangs as one.
